Woh kaifiyat jisme insaan itna khali ho jaata hai — andar se itna khaali — ke dene ke liye kuch bacha hi nahi hota. Thakaan itni gehri ho jaati hai ke aaraam bhi kaam nahi karta, aur jo cheez pehle zaruri lagti thi woh ab be-maani lagne lagti hai.
English Definition
Burnout is a state of chronic depletion — physical, emotional, and mental — resulting from prolonged exposure to demands that exceed a person's capacity to recover. The World Health Organisation classifies it as an occupational phenomenon resulting from unmanaged chronic stress, though it extends beyond the workplace into caregiving, parenting, academic life, and any role that demands more than it gives back over a sustained period. Burnout is not a character flaw, not laziness, and not ingratitude. It is what happens when a person has been running on empty for too long — and nothing has been replenished.
Stress vs Burnout
These two are consistently confused — and the confusion matters, because they require different responses.
Stress
Burnout
Too much — overwhelmed but still engaged
Too little left — emptied out and detached
"I have so much to do"
"I cannot make myself care anymore"
Still feels something — urgency, anxiety, pressure
Emotional numbness — flatness, indifference
Motivated to finish and rest
Does not believe rest will help — or anything will
Energy is strained
Roots & Origins
From Old English haelan, meaning "to cure, save, make whole, sound, and well," heal carries an older sense of restoration rather than mere repair. Read in that light, support around burnout, stress, and emotional exhaustion can be framed not only as symptom management, but as a return toward wholeness - mental, emotional, bodily, and relational.
Feeling burned out or emotionally exhausted?
Stress counselling can help you understand the pressure pattern, rebuild boundaries, and recover from emotional overload at a sustainable pace.
Good support for burnout, stress, and emotional exhaustion is not just about a label. It is an integrative journey that brings together clear language, practical next steps, and a felt sense of safety.
Acceptance of current state
“Healing is not the absence of the wound, but the ability to carry it with gentleness.”

Energy is gone
Future still feels possible
Future feels pointless or unreachable
Resolves with rest and reduced load
Persists even after rest — requires deeper recovery
The simplest way to understand the difference: stress is having too much. Burnout is having nothing left.
Detailed Explanation
Burnout develops slowly. It does not arrive suddenly — it accumulates. A person does not usually notice it happening until they are already deep inside it, because the early stages feel like virtues: working harder, caring more, pushing through, not complaining. In Pakistan, these are praised. The person who stays late, sacrifices their weekends, never says no, and carries everyone else's weight is admired — until they collapse.
The World Health Organisation formally recognised burnout in ICD-11 in 2019 — not as a medical condition but as an occupational phenomenon. This distinction matters: burnout is not something wrong with the person. It is the predictable result of a situation that demanded more than any human being could sustainably give.
What makes burnout particularly insidious is that by the time a person recognises it, they have often lost the very resources they need to recover — energy, motivation, the ability to feel pleasure or connection. The tank is not just low. It has a hole in it. And simply resting does not fix the hole.
How Common is Burnout in Pakistan?
Burnout is not tracked as a standalone statistic in Pakistan, but the conditions that produce it are everywhere. A culture that equates relentless productivity with worth, limited labour protections, long working hours in both formal and informal sectors, a caregiving burden that falls almost entirely on women, and no mainstream language for rest as a legitimate need — these create the conditions for widespread burnout across professions, households, and educational institutions.
Three Sources of Burnout in Pakistan
Occupational Burnout
The most discussed form — chronic depletion from a demanding work environment. In Pakistan, this is especially prevalent among doctors and healthcare workers carrying impossible patient loads with minimal support, lawyers and corporate professionals working without boundaries, teachers managing large classes with no resources and little respect, and anyone working in a system that demands maximum output and offers minimum support or recognition.
Caregiver Burnout
Among the least discussed and most widespread forms in Pakistan. Caregiver burnout occurs when a person — almost always a woman — is responsible for the continuous care of others: children, elderly parents, sick family members, in-laws, and often all of these simultaneously, inside a joint family structure that provides social connection but rarely distributes the physical and emotional labour equitably.
The caregiver is expected to be endlessly available, endlessly patient, and endlessly giving. Her own needs are invisible — including to herself, because she has been told since childhood that selflessness is the highest virtue. By the time burnout arrives, she often does not have language for what she is experiencing. She only knows she has nothing left — and that she feels guilty for having nothing left.
Academic Burnout
Rampant among Pakistani students, particularly those in pre-medical, engineering, and competitive programmes. The pressure to perform — for the family, for the future, for survival in a country where credentials are often the only path to security — is enormous. Students study for years under conditions of sustained high stress with minimal emotional support, minimal rest, and the constant message that rest is a luxury they cannot afford. Academic burnout produces the same exhaustion, detachment, and loss of meaning as occupational burnout — and is just as rarely named or treated.
Symptoms / Signs
The clinical framework most widely used to understand burnout was developed by psychologist Christina Maslach, and it maps burnout across three dimensions. Understanding these three together explains why burnout feels so different from ordinary tiredness.
Dimension One — Exhaustion
This is the most recognisable face of burnout. Physical and emotional depletion so deep that sleep and weekends do not touch it. Waking up tired. Ending every day more empty than the day before. Feeling like the body is moving through something thick. No reserve left for anything — not even the things that once brought joy.
Dimension Two — Cynicism and Detachment
This is the dimension most people do not expect and most often misread as a character change. The person who once cared deeply about their work, their students, their patients, their family — stops caring. Not because they chose to. Because caring requires something, and there is nothing left to give to it.
They go through the motions. They become emotionally distant in ways that confuse and hurt the people around them. They find themselves feeling nothing where they used to feel everything. This is not coldness. It is the psyche's protective response to depletion — a circuit breaker that trips when the load becomes unsustainable.
Dimension Three — Reduced Efficacy
The third dimension is the quietest and the most damaging to identity. The person begins to feel that nothing they do is good enough, or matters, or makes a difference. Work that once felt meaningful feels pointless. Skills that were once solid feel suddenly uncertain. The question "what is the point of any of this" is not philosophical — it is exhausted.
This dimension is particularly brutal in Pakistani culture because so much of a person's worth is tied to their productivity and performance. When burnout erodes the sense of efficacy, it also erodes the sense of self.
Burnout vs Depression — A Critical Distinction
These two conditions overlap significantly, share many surface symptoms, and frequently co-exist. But they are not the same — and understanding the distinction affects what kind of support actually helps.
Burnout
Depression
Primarily role-related — tied to a specific domain of life
Pervasive — affects all areas of life regardless of context
Emotional numbness and detachment
Can include profound sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness
Improves significantly with removal or reduction of the stressor and genuine rest
Persists even when external circumstances improve
The person can usually identify what is draining them
Often feels like there is no reason — "I have nothing to complain about but I am not okay"
Sense of self remains relatively intact — the person knows who they are, just has nothing left
Depression frequently attacks identity and sense of worth at the root
Usually does not include thoughts of suicide or self-harm
Can include suicidal ideation, particularly when severe
The most important thing to understand: burnout left unaddressed can develop into clinical depression. And depression can make a person far more vulnerable to burnout. A professional assessment can determine which is present — or whether both are — and what the appropriate response is.
How Burnout Shows Up in Daily Life in Pakistan
A doctor who has worked through three consecutive night shifts, who no longer feels anything when a patient is in distress, and who cannot remember why they chose medicine
A mother in a joint family who manages the cooking, cleaning, childcare, and emotional needs of an entire household and who cries in the bathroom because it is the only place she is alone
A final-year medical student who used to love studying and now cannot open a book — not from laziness, but from a depletion that has become physical
A professional who arrives at work on time, completes tasks, replies to emails — and feels absolutely nothing about any of it
A caregiver for an elderly parent who loves them completely and has quietly stopped being able to feel that love through the exhaustion
Someone who used to have a personality — opinions, humour, enthusiasm — and who now has nothing to say and no energy to say it
Common Myths About Burnout in Pakistan
"Thaka hua insaan aaraam kar le, theek ho jaata hai" — rest alone does not recover burnout that is structural
"Shukar guzaar hona chahiye — bohot log job chahte hain" — gratitude is real and important, but it does not remove depletion
"Yeh toh sab ke saath hota hai — himmat rakhein" — suffering in silence is not strength; it is the condition for collapse
"Sirf kamzor log thaktay hain" — burnout disproportionately affects the most conscientious, committed, and high-functioning people
"Ghar mein kaam karna burnout nahi hota" — caregiver and domestic burnout are clinically identical to occupational burnout
"Chutti lo aur theek ho jao" — a holiday can help, but if the person returns to the same unmanaged conditions, burnout returns within weeks
"Yeh toh depression hai" — burnout and depression are related but distinct, and conflating them can lead to incomplete treatment
What Drives Burnout
Burnout is not caused by weakness. It is caused by a sustained mismatch between demands and resources. Specific drivers include:
Unmanageable workload — consistently being asked to give more than is humanly sustainable
Lack of control — having no say over how, when, or how much one works or gives
Absence of recognition — working hard with no acknowledgement, appreciation, or reward
Poor relationships — a working or living environment with ongoing conflict, distrust, or emotional hostility
Unfairness — carrying a disproportionate share of the load relative to others in the same environment
Values mismatch — being required to act consistently against one's own values — a doctor in a corrupt system, a teacher in a school that does not care about students
No boundary between role and self — being unable to ever fully leave work, caregiving, or responsibility behind
Perfectionism — setting standards that require perpetual maximum output with no tolerance for limitation
Financial pressure — being unable to reduce the load because survival depends on sustaining it
Recovery — What Actually Helps
Recovery from burnout is not the same as treating a disorder. It requires both external change and internal support — and the external piece is not optional.
Remove or reduce the source — This is the most important and most avoided step. If the conditions that created burnout do not change, no amount of therapy or rest will produce lasting recovery. This may mean renegotiating workload, setting limits, delegating, or making a significant life change.
Genuine rest — Not scrolling. Not passive consumption. Rest that genuinely restores — sleep, silence, time in nature, creative activity, unhurried connection with people who do not need anything from you.
Rebuilding meaning — Slowly reintroducing activities that feel meaningful, pleasurable, or alive — not to be productive, but to remember what it feels like to be a person rather than a function.
Therapy — Particularly helpful for addressing the beliefs that enabled burnout in the first place: the inability to say no, the equation of worth with output, the shame around needing rest. CBT and ACT are both relevant. For caregiver burnout, therapy often needs to address identity and the grief of losing oneself inside a role.
Community and support — Burnout deepens in isolation. Being genuinely heard — by a therapist, a trusted person, or a support group — is part of recovery, not a supplement to it.
Medication — If burnout has crossed into clinical depression or anxiety, medication under psychiatric supervision may be part of the picture.
Time — Recovery from significant burnout is not measured in days. It is measured in weeks and months. This is not failure. It is the reality of what deep depletion requires.
A Note on Rest in Pakistan
Pakistan does not have a cultural framework for rest as a legitimate need. Rest is earned — after the work is done, after the children are grown, after the parents are settled, after the degree is finished. There is always a reason it is not yet time to rest.
This belief is one of the most significant drivers of burnout in the Pakistani context. Rest is not a reward for productivity. It is a biological and psychological requirement. A person who cannot rest without guilt is a person whose burnout will keep returning — because the conditions that created it are inside them as much as around them.
When to Seek Help
Seek professional support if:
Exhaustion has persisted for weeks or months and does not lift with rest
You have lost the ability to feel — about your work, your relationships, or yourself
You are functioning on the outside but feel completely hollow on the inside
Physical symptoms have appeared — persistent headaches, stomach problems, lowered immunity, unexplained pain
You are using substances, food, screens, or other behaviours to manage the depletion
Hopelessness has set in — a sense that it will never get better or that nothing matters
Thoughts of harming yourself or not wanting to be here have appeared
